How to Create a Film Pitch Deck That Gets Your Project Greenlit

Learn how to build a compelling pitch deck for your film or TV project. Structure, design tips, and what investors and networks actually want to see.

What is a film pitch deck?

A pitch deck is a visual presentation that sells your film or TV project in a meeting. While your production bible is the deep reference document, your pitch deck is the sizzle reel in slide form — designed to generate excitement and convey your vision quickly.

A great pitch deck doesn't try to explain everything. It makes the reader feel the show. It makes them see it. And most importantly, it makes them want to be part of it.

What goes in a pitch deck?

Most professional pitch decks follow this structure:

1. Cover Slide Title, genre, format, your name and contact info. A single striking image that sets the tone. This slide has three seconds to make someone want to see slide two.

2. Logline & Premise Your one-sentence logline followed by a short paragraph expanding the concept. What's the world? What's the hook? Why now?

3. Themes What is this show really about? Beneath the plot, what human truth are you exploring? Themes tell the buyer why this project matters.

4. World & Setting Visual slides showing the world of your project. Use reference images, mood boards, and brief descriptions. Make them see it.

5. Characters One slide per main character: name, image, and a punchy description that captures their essence and their arc. Casting suggestions are optional but effective.

6. Season/Story Overview For series: the season-one arc in a paragraph or two. For film: the three-act structure summarized. Don't spoil everything — leave them wanting more.

7. Tone & Comparables Visual references and comparable titles. "The visual lyricism of Euphoria meets the ensemble dynamics of Succession." Be specific about what you're referencing and why.

8. Why Now / Market Position Briefly: why does this project belong in the current market? What audience is underserved? What trend does it ride?

Design principles

Less text, more visuals. A pitch deck is not a document — it's a presentation. Each slide should be primarily visual with minimal text.

Consistent aesthetic. Your deck's design should reflect your project's tone. A dark thriller shouldn't look like a rom-com.

Professional quality. Sloppy design signals sloppy thinking. Clean typography, high-quality images, consistent layout.

The secret: build your bible first

The most common mistake is building the pitch deck before the production bible. This leads to decks that look pretty but can't answer basic questions: "What happens in episode four?" "Why does the protagonist change?" "Where does season two go?"

Build the substance (your production bible) first. The pitch deck is the highlight reel — and you can't have highlights without the full game.

With The Greenlight Bible, this workflow is automatic. Write your bible, and the app generates pitch deck slides from your content — cover, premise, themes, world, characters, and story overview — ready to present fullscreen.

Tips from the room

Know your audience. A pitch to Netflix reads differently than a pitch to an indie financier. Tailor the emphasis.

Practice the talk track. The slides support your spoken pitch — they don't replace it. Know what you'll say on each slide.

Leave them wanting more. The goal of a pitch deck isn't to tell the whole story. It's to get a "tell me more" and a second meeting.

Bring the bible. After the pitch, leave behind your production bible as the deep-dive document. The deck got them excited; the bible proves you've done the work.
